As I sit here enjoying the snow (far more than I should) and seriously contemplating a move to lands that get covered in snow and have more desirable summer months, my thoughts inevitably drift off to sitting in front of a window while I watch the snow come down and drinking a Tom & Jerry. It amazes me how few people (especially around here) know this fantastic drink, and I am almost starting to view it as a public service to introduce people to it.
Fortunately I tend to hang out with AARP members, so I don't have to worry about the legalities of it.
Two years ago, right after my son was born, we were pretty much holed up in the house through the winter months. As such, I got very well skilled at making Tom & Jerry batter. I felt it prudent to blog about this, and was just googling to see if I can find the old recipe I used when lo and behold, my long-forgotten post that I wrote is on the first page when you search for "tom and jerry batter".
Now I have my recipe, got a good chuckle out of the blog entry (Mark Foley references always make me laugh) and have more reason to trudge my way down to the store to pick up some eggs so I can make my batter and feed the family breakfast tomorrow.
(Now, more embarrassing was that title "A drink for the dreary season" inspired me to click on it, thinking "This recipe will be awesome!" without realizing I was going to my own Vox posting)
Today was the first day that truly counts as "dreary". It was absolutely dreary, and after pulling an all-nighter for work last night, I needed a little perk today.
The best solution for dreary days and all-night work shifts is booze. I'm sure it is in the wikipedia somewhere, you should go look it up. Well, my drink of choice for the holiday season is a "Tom and Jerry". It's a great drink, and the photos are a ringing endorsement that Japanese people are crazy. It is somewhat typical to abhor cinnamon, which is just nuts. Bat-ball crazy, I say. Regardless, it is a tasty drink and one that should be consumed when the weather sucks.
Ingredients: Get some good brandy, some great dark rum, 3 eggs, cream of tartar, powdered sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and some ground cloves.
Separate the yolks from the whites, and whip the egg whites, cream
of tartar and sugar until stiff peaks form. I mean stiff. Get those
egg whites as stiff as Mark Foley at a cast party for the OC. Then,
beat the hell out of the yolks. Whip them until they stop changing
consistency and color. Then blend in the spices except for the nutmeg
(save that for on top). Once this is done, fold the yolks in with the
stiff egg whites.
One jiggah-what-jiggah-who of rum, and a half (or a ful) of brandy along with two tablespoons of the batter. Fill the mug with boiling water, and get some good chairs to sit around and consume the tasty goodness. Good for friends, as this makes about 6 mugs.
